Nailheads are glass, flat-backed beads with one or two holes running parallel to the flat surface. They are named for the most common version, which is a domed and faceted metallic bead and looks very much like a nailhead. They are available in other colours, finishes and shapes. Also called “sew-ons”, they were made mostly for the French couture houses in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and were hand-sewn onto women’s garments, trims and accessories. Some of the bigger and brightly coloured ones are from the early to mid 20th century. Prices are in Canadian dollars.
